Day 126

picture update

They're Back

The students, that is. As we speak (as I type?), there are loud "woo-hooers" walking down the street, and a group of people gathered in one of my neighbors' backyards is chanting countdowns for (I'm assuming) keg stands.

On another note, if anybody can tell me if it's possible to download free Dynamic DNS software, and if that shit works on a modem that obtains its WAN IP address automatically through a PPPoE rather than a DHCP, I'd really appreciate it. The literature out there is pretty technical so I'm having a hard time deciphering what exactly I just said to you, let alone what the answers are.

Hosting a website on your own computer is a bitch. But if I can figure it out, I'll be able to put unlimited songs on here for free rather than paying box.net. God damn it, that's a lame reason for going through all this trouble. If I just payed about $90/year, I could buy a static IP address and be done with it. Donations are welcome, otherwise you have to hear me bitch until I figure this out on my own.

This is just writing. The photo will come in a few hours. I've already taken it, but my camera is in the other room and I'm comfortable so I'd prefer not to move for the moment.

I rode my bike to work this morning because I have this new (unobtainable) goal where I don't drive to work until the month of September is over. Day One of reaching the new goal was successful, at least. But only sort of. By the time I got off of work, my front tire was flat. I thought about it for a while and decided that walking it home wasn't worth it, so I just walked home by myself.

Now I'm going to have to drive there to pick the damn bike up. Kind of defeats the purpose of the goal.

But it was a nice walk (albeit hot and tiring after having been on my feet for 5 hours). I strolled through campus to see all the hustle and bustle of the new students moving in. I stopped at Farrand Field to take some pictures of the marching band practice, and a nice couple sat on the bench next to where I was taking the pictures from. I started talking to them about their kid (a boy) that just moved in (to Baker Hall), where they're from (Baltimore, Maryland; "a whole plane trip away," as the father put it), and what I'm doing now that I've graduated (unemployment). After breifly talking about a few restaurants for them to check out for dinner (Café Gondolier [Days 4, 40, & 113] or Rincon del Sol [Day 90) we soon parted ways. As I was walking away, the mom called back over her shoulder at me and told me good luck with my job search, and that she believes that everything will work out soon; fate always helps you out in the end, she said.

That made me smile the rest of the way home.

I bet those parents were thankful to talk to you. Letting go of your children is so hard for us.
