Oh my god, I just caught up with all of my editing only to let it gather up on me again. I'm now posting this two days late. Yes, I feel like a schlamiel (yeah, all the Yidz in da house throw ya hands in da air!!!).
So I worked on Christmas Eve, which is lame, but it was actually kind of a nice day. It was busy enough that I made a few bucks, we closed the doors at 2:30, all the tables had left shortly after 3:00, and a bunch of servers just hung out around the bar drinking free booze (Avery IPA, Pernod [France's licorice-flavored liquor that looks like Mountain Dew], Sambuca [Italy's licorice-flavored liquor], espresso shots).
I finally left just after 4:00, and on my way out the microphone of a singer on the mall caught my attention. The sun had set not long before (yay for post-equinox day elongation) and the sky was just starting to fade to a deep blue, but there was just enough light for the silver of the microphone to still gleam. As he finished singing a Christmas carol, I approached him and asked if he would mind me taking some pictures. I think that this is the first time I've ever actually approached someone rather than awkwardly trying to take candids from afar*. I talked to Brian about this fact, and he said that at a photo workshop he took, one of their assignments was to walk around on the street and ask people to pose for pictures. It's tough, but a little Pernod helps calm the nerves I guess.
*Ahem, remember this guy? Yeah, he's staring right at me. This was the first and only picture I took of him because he stared at me for like 10 minutes after I took this. Consequently, that's a terrible picture. Oh, and as for this guy, he asked me to take his picture. He was like "Oooh, this is a classic hip-hop pose. Oooh, how about this one?" I liked him so much that I bought a demo-disk from him.
Anyway, the singer (named Anthony Choice) was very nice, shook my hand, made some smalltalk with me and told me to shoot away. I thanked him by tossing a contribution into his tip container, sat down, listened to him sing a few songs, and did as he said: I shot away. We exchanged contact info so that I could send him some of the pictures, and I walked back to my car wearing shorts in the freezing cold twilight with a big smile on my face.
