Day 154

DSC_3974.NEF and Growing

You get a few pictures today. I got to work early because I finally got my bike tire fixed (did you know that the CU bike station sells new inner tubes for only $2? What a deal, especially when you have exactly $2 cash in your wallet like I did.) and decided to ride it today.

I'm just trying to soak up these mild late-summer days while they still exist.

While I was feeling all high-and-mighty taking pictures with my bombtastic SLR surrounded by all the students with their point-and-shoots, a chick walked by with her D300 outfitted with the hardcore vertical grip/battery pack. In total, the camera is about the size of a cinder block. Currently, if I were to upgrade my camera, that's the one I'd get. I might actually consider getting it when its successor comes out (soonish? probably some time in '09 is my guess) and its price drops. Or should I get the D90 with all of its new flashy next-generation features and plenty awesome photo quality for my purposes (blogs don't require that great of image quality in the first place)? Or should I just shut up and put all of my energy into finding a new job so that I can actually afford to think about these things?

The last time I just sat outside of work was on Day 36. These pictures were all taken only 30 feet from where that one was. That was the day that I overheard Abbie talking on the phone about Jess and Rollie breaking up. None of you know who they are unless you drink at The Pub a lot, so that's pretty inconsequential information.

Mike. Come on. We talked about this. The d300 is nice and all...but Canon man. Canon. Canon. As Scott put it last night, "Nikon has been sucking Canon's dick for some 8 years...and only within the last 7 months has that changed..."

And changed it did. The 5D Mark II was just announced. FF sensor. 21.1 MP. ISO expandable up to 256000. Digic 4. yeah. siiiiick.

I want one.

Plus...you want one of those sexy red ringed L lenses don't you?

mmm. yeah.

Okay Mark, listen. Nikon might be the dick suckers here, but they're only sucking the finest top-of-the-line luxurious dicks. If I had $2500+ to spend on a camera, and $1500+ to spend per lens, I might be a little more particular with my purchasing choices.

But I don't see how in the world the 5D Mark II impacts Canon's mid-priced mid-level pro-sumer bodies, such as your very own 40D. Canon's top end might be better than Nikon's, but that doesn't change the fact that the D300 is comparable to - or even arguably better than - your camera.

And like I said, I could be shooting with an old Pentax (those are pretty shitty, right?) from 1998, and the image quality wouldn't look much different than a hasselblad's on this blog.

If you can come up with an argument to convince me that Canon's sub-$1200 camera bodies are worth switching, or that in the long run, their sub-$500 lenses are likewise likely to vastly outperform Canon for the next decade, the I will be happy to consider converting.

Remember, too, that you're the one that told me to go with Nikon about 6 months ago. If I convert to Canon now, will you tell me in 6 months that Nikon's really the way to go, and that I should switch back?

Ok, the two of you wrote a lot of words, so I feel a bit pathetic writing only 3 sentences. I like the third mini-picture. Love the colors and the people in the background.

Nice work!

(ok, it's like 5 sentences, but whatevs)
